Learning the basics of journalism

Journalism belongs to one of those disciplines that are at the intersection of many sciences, fields of knowledge and activity. Therefore, a clear program of study this craft at the moment does not exist. Different universities offer their own courses of study, each teacher (required eminent journalist) gives its information and definitions, and each student is looking for his own style and to choose their own path, no matter how complex and “wrong” in terms of classical science, he was not.

But, nevertheless, there are certain rules to follow that can facilitate the student find his role and activities. The first step is to think about the form in which the media would like to work. Today they are four (though in many textbooks as the main point is still three, ignoring the Internet) – television, radio, print and the Internet.

Having defined the type of media, it is advisable to think about in what area I would like to work. Today, a lot of them – entertainment TV channels and newspapers, Internet portals, documentaries, current affairs, etc. Also important subject – it could be sports, children’s themes, women, cars, education, music, medicine, information technology, etc. As a rule, the majority of young journalists can easily choose one or other type of media, but to decide on topics and trends is difficult, which is understandable, since at the time of learning and becoming a professional look can be changed more than once.

The key for a journalist are skills such as the ability to cover the situation, look for interesting scenes of everyday life, to influence public opinion. It is important to be able to write well – and, this skill is important not only for those who are going to work in the press, but almost all journalists. On television, the radio will also have to write the lyrics and stories podvodok. As for the print media and Internet resources, in this case the ability to write is fundamental.

Many journalists and teachers believe that good writing can not be taught, and this is partly true. If a person does not feel the floor and can not accurately convey the usual phrase that he wants to say and express, it is unlikely that training will help here. But to develop existing skills and improve skills can and should be.

With regard of Television and Radio, for them important ability to improvise, and TV – to work in the frame. In this case, much depends on factors that have nothing to do with the talents and abilities of the journalist even if he is a super-professionals, but it has not a very pleasant or aesthetic appearance, a career on TV, he is unlikely to. If the appearance is quite mediocre, but there are problems at work “on camera”, you can visit the special courses of the program – any school television discount will give the opportunity to learn skills in the frame.

In addition, it is desirable to have a journalist at least minimal knowledge in areas such as culture and art, sociology, political science, psychology, fundamentals of mass communication, conflict management, which will allow more effectively carry out their professional duties.
